Beware of Domain Scammers
Many companies are posing as legitimate domain registrars warning domain owners that their domain is about to expire and they must transfer it immediately. The most widely spread scam is that of Registry of America (UltraDomains). They will fax official-looking documents that require you to fill out your information, make a payment and sign to transfer your domain away. Recently, a fake site was forced to shut down after sending fake emails to registered domain owners. Read more

Spam Fighters Connect at JamSpam
Representatives from Yahoo, Dell Computer, Oracle, Microsoft, Sun Microsystems, AOL Time Warner and DoubleClick, among others, gathered at CNET Networks for a second meeting this year to talk about the problem unsolicited bulk e-mail has created for legitimate marketers, technology developers, Internet service providers and their customers. The goal of the forum, called JamSpam, is "to produce an open and interoperable antispam specification that serves as a universal solution to both edges of the spam word," according to the group's mission statement. ICANN Announces New Head
Australian Paul Twomey, took over Stuart Lynn's position as president and CEO of ICANN on March 27th. As the first non-American to head the organization, Twomey told reporters that his selection represents another step in the maturation of ICANN. Read more

Businesses Face Losing Domains Under New Rules
ICANN adopted 'consensus policies' regarding the accuracy of WHOIS domain name data that could result in businesses losing their domains. Under ICANN's new policy, all registrants will be required to be contacted annually by their registrar to ensure all data on the WHOIS database is correct. Read More

"Finders Keepers" Claim Wins Domain Dispute
Vernons, a major operator of football pools in the UK, allowed their domain name, vernons.com, to expire / or alllowed the domain name "vernons.com" to expire. It was subsequently re-registered by the Respondent - a Hong-Kong based entity called Vertical Axis, Inc. In realizing their mistake, Vernons lawyers sent a "cease and desist" letter to the Complainant in December 2002, demanding the return of the domain. After the Respondent failed to reply, the case was referred to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) under the Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP) and Vertical Axis won the dispute and maintains ownership of the domain name.
