Dot-Com Waiting List Under Fire
Two lawmakers disputed the proposal for VeriSign/Network Solutions to monopolize the industry of expired domain names. Internet Corporation of Names and Numbers (ICANN) nominally approved NSI's scheme to monopolize the marketplace, despite objections from the overwhelming majority of domain registrars ICANN is supposed to serve, and the obvious anticompetitive implications. Congressmen Turn on ICANN
After nearly five years of well-documented and widespread abuse by the organization charged with running the Internet, ICANN, US Congress has decided it doesn't like what's going on and two Congressmen, Brian Baird and Jay Inslee, have introduced legislation "to ensure healthy competition in the Internet naming market". The Fair Transparent and Competitive Internet Naming Act was sparked by ICANN's attempt to hand another monopoly to its main benefactor VeriSign - this time giving it exclusive rights to all domains that expire at the expense of any current competitors and consumers. Registrars Form Domain Justice Coalition
A Domain Justice Coalition has been formed by 15 of the leading domain registrars and resellers in hopes to desolate the Waiting List Service (WLS), proposed by VeriSign. "WLS lacks support from the Internet community and is both anti-competitive and anti-consumer," said Clint Page, Dotster president. It is thought that if the proposal is successful, it will prevail increasing rates for the purchasing of domain names with an added lack of service to the consumers. Read more

HP Adds SpamSubtract to New PCs
Hewlett-Packard has announced plans to pre-load anti-spam software on the newest products of HP Pavilion and Compaq Presario desktops. This will prohibit offensive materials to be viewed or read as to the discretion of the user or adult. A combined effort from Tech giants, AOL Time Warner and Yahoo have collaborated efforts to establish "open dialogue that will include organizations across this industry to drive technical standards and industry guidelines that can be adopted regardless of platform." Anti-Spam Proposals Get Tougher
