INDUSTRY UPDATE

Yahoo! Acquires Overture

Now that Yahoo! has merged with Overture, they have the potential to be the largest marketing company in the internet industry. Overture has one of the largest search engines in the commercial industry, which will compliment Yahoo's searches. "Together, the two companies will be able to provide the most compelling and diversified suite of integrated marketing solutions around the globe, including branding, paid placement, graphical ads, text links, multimedia, and contextual advertising," said Terry Semel, chairman and chief executive officer, Yahoo! It also helps to acquire and maintain any domains that could be affiliated with your company brand to prevent them from getting into the hands of a scammer. Read more.

ICANN UPDATE

ICANN Comes To Terms With Country Domains

When the Directors of ICANN met in Montreal, they withdrew their dominance upon other countries. After four years of debate, ICANN will no longer try to dictate what other countries, besides the U.S., will do with their domain names. Cultural and Religious differences have made it difficult for the internet to have only one internet law to guide the industry. Ultimately other countries are now free to set their own guidelines and will not have to abide by ICANN's dispute rules (UDRP) or its Whois decisions (what and how much information about a domain name owner is displayed for public consumption).
