ICANN UPDATE
U.S. Renews ICANN's Authority For Another Year
Despite criticism for failing to involve the online public in its decisions regarding internal reforms and VeriSign's proposed WLS, top commerce Dept. officials stated that the US government will renew ICANN's (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) authority to manage the Internet's global addressing system for another year. However, in announcing the extension, U.S. Commerce Department official Nancy Victory said the department "is frankly disappointed that ICANN's progress on the (contractual) tasks thus far has moved so slowly." The Commerce Department announced that ICANN has agreed to continue its internal reform effort and to address broadly voiced concerns about the openness and transparency of its decision-making processes. ICANN Reaffirms ISOC's Takeover of .ORG
The ICANN reaffirmed its recommendation that the Internet Society (ISOC), a Reston nonprofit, take over management of ".org" Internet domains starting in 2003. ICANN's international board of directors has final say over whether to accept the ICANN staff's recommendation. The board is expected to make its decision next month. In its final staff report, ICANN dismissed suggestions that ISOC is financially and technologically unfit to operate .org, the world's fifth-largest Internet domain system. ICANN manages the Internet's worldwide addressing system under agreements with the U.S. government. Learn More

Not So Safe, SafeRenew, Backfires on Register.com
Register.com Inc may have shot itself in the foot when it introduced the controversial customer retention system, called SafeRenew, in January 2001, writes Kevin Murphy. The company reported that it will make a loss for the first time in over a year, and its SafeRenew system seems at least partly to blame, alongside the closing of its Afternic site. SafeRenew is a system that automatically bills the credit card of a registrant thereby renewing their domain for an additional year.
Many customers disliked being billed without their explicit authorization, and chose to tell their credit card companies or banks that the charges are unauthorized, causing a "chargeback". This has lead to at least one class action lawsuit and increased credit card chargeback penalties for Register.com. In general, there has been an increase in credit card fraud online that has harmed Register.com and the whole domain community.

Register.com Closes Afternic Due to Losses
