Domain Names--Three Strikes You're Out
Recent research has found that many companies are losing the opportunity to make millions due to the difficulty for consumers to locate the company's website. The research found that the majority of internet users (60 percent) will try a total of three times at guessing a domain address before they move on to another company. It was then revealed that 71 percent would then try a competitor's website after being unsuccessful in locating the website of choice. Read more.

VeriSign Mulls Way to Make Money from Typos
VeriSign is testing a new domain name service that could create tens of millions of dollars in revenue for their company and partners. This service would flourish on the typing errors of consumers. If a consumer entered in an incorrect domain address, then they would automatically be redirected to a search engine site, offering similar sites of interest. Read more.

EarthLink Targets 100 Spammers
Earthlink filed a federal lawsuit on August 27, 2003 alleging that approximately 100 spammers violated the law by conducting credit card fraud and identity theft. The legal action was taken to try and seek out the true identity of the IP addresses that committed the fraud and over 250 million junk emails. The group of individuals sending out the emails were trying to get consumers to divulge personal financial information, such as credit cards and banking information. This is just the beginning for targeting spammers. Many companies are focusing on conquering the spam that fills our inboxes. Read more.

ICANN UPDATE
ICANN Approves Waiting List Service
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) approved the Waiting List Service, which was proposed by VeriSign. The WLS will begin in October for a trial period of one year. This will allow potential buyers to pay VeriSign, in advance, for the opportunity to buy a domain name when it expires. When a prospective domain name is going to expire, the current domain holder will be notified of an interested buyer. The original owner will then have the choice to let the name expire or to renew it. However, the new plan will not disclose who the new bidder of the domain name will be. The trial period will be a huge test to whether or not ICANN should have approved the WLS and impacted the structure of the industry. Read more

NEW! Customizable Vacation Autoresponders
For all our Hosting Customers: now when you go on vacation you can put your email on vacation at the click of a button! Our new vacation autoresponder lets your friends, family, customers, suppliers, etc. know when you are unable to respond to email for any period of time. From your hosting control panel click "Manage Email" and select the "Settings" button next to the account you would like to have the autoresponder setup for. When an email is sent to that address, it will still be delivered as normal but the sender will receive a note that you have written letting them know that you are not currently checking your email.
To access this new feature, log into your HOSTING ACCOUNT via your domain control panel

NEW! Alternate SMTP Port
In an effort to cut down on 'SPAM' (unsolicited email), many ISP's are blocking 3rd party SMTP (outgoing email) on port 25. BuyDomains's mail servers now respond to port 24 as well as port 25. Port 25 is the default port for all outgoing mail, and the port you connect to when you try to send mail through mail.yourdomain.com. Soon, it may be an industry standard for all major ISP's to block 3rd party SMTP on port 25. If your ISP is blocking 3rd party SMTP on port 25, you can now change the SMTP port on your email client to send yourdomain.com email through port 24. Select the Related link for "Alternate SMTP port" in the "Manage Email" section of your hosting control panel for more information.
